THE GREAT HIGHWAY Park
Portraits and interviews conducted between December 2020 and October 2022 in support of a successful campaign to keep cars off of San Francisco’s Great Highway. In November 2022, 60% of voters voted “No” on Proposition I to permanently solidify the space as a park.
“Since the pandemic, it’s become an amazing place for kids to play for people inside the city to feel safe — without cars — and that danger”
“A place to get together with people where you can see the ocean… It’s so inspirational”
“I think it’s kind of six of one… the one down side is that lower great highway becomes crowded on the weekends, and it seemed like in the past this alleviated that.
But (it being closed to cars) is such a benefit to so many… it’s essentially now an extension of Golden Gate Park”
“You’re looking at it right now… Everyone is out here enjoying this. I think it’d be great if the city kept it closed (to vehicles) so that people could enjoy it on foot, on bikes or whatever it is instead of just cars”
“I’m out here twice a day with the baby, and that’s his nap time… On the weekends we’ll suggest that we get together here (with friends) for a walk and get a coffee.”
“I try to walk between 3-4 miles every day. I have a balance problem, and The Great Highway is nice and level… Some of these ruddy roads are very dangerous for me."
“We’re back visiting family… We literally just got here a couple hours ago and we came right here!”
“At first I was against it, but honestly it’s been great to see how much people are coming outside and walking up and down the highway…. I hope it stays like this forever”
“Everyone that I talk to hopes that they keep it closed (to cars) It’s so versatile, you can do anything!”
“This is nice because you can avoid people! If it wasn’t here I wouldn’t get my fat ass off the couch, haha!”
“I do like the idea of the beach as a place for people to congregate. I used to never come down here before… You’d be on the sand but you’d constantly hear the car noise…”
“I spend my day at work with a double mask, face shield, and gloves… The idea of being able to be out, and see people, watch the birds and occasionally a whale… it’s an incredible stress relief”
“This is basically where I come to clear my mind. I view it as a sanctuary and release.”
“It’s bringing happiness to everyone’s lives, and that’s not going to stop after the pandemic "
“This is a place I can come when it gets dark, it feels fine.. there’s street lights, no cars. I would never have gone to a bar before, I would use sports to meet people. This is a new kind of space… I’ve had trouble finding (something like this)"
“I think it better serves the public having it as a pedestrian space versus used for cars”
“It’s been a place of respite. A place to re connect with other community members. Fresh air, outdoor, inspired exercise and activity. It just gives you a nice reset."
“It really means a lot to be able to see people. This is the most amount of people I’ve seen in one place in awhile.”
“It’s been a godsend…. Having somewhere to go to decompress and walk is amazing… It’s been really fantastic… It’s really nice to see the neighborhood using this space as a communal backyard”
“It’s therapy. To be by the beach and to have space, but also people around… you don’t feel so isolated.”
“It taught me how to rollerblade better. It was a safe space for me to learn how to brake instead of downhill”
“Personally I think this (no cars) is amazing. And there’s other ways to get along this part of the city”
I’m fourth generation San Franciscan… a Lower Great Highway resident… We come every day… this is different than anything else. You can run, you can bike, you can roller skate. It’s really cool to see. I hope it stays.
This is totally worth it. It’s like building a community that maybe didn’t seem like it before…
Especially living in the city, you’re really thankful for the places where you can connect with nature and be in nature.
For skating… not getting in the way of everyone… not getting hit by cars. One of our friends just got hit by a car (on Haight) a couple weeks ago.
“It represents an appreciation for the city, the outdoors, mental health, and the ability to clean your head with fresh air and sunshine…”
We’re the Great Highway Skate Crew. We meet at Irving & Great Highway. Sometimes at sunset, sometimes in the morning
“It’s reminded me of why I love this city during a time when the city doesn’t exactly feel like the city. This has confirmed San Francisco as one of the very best places to live”
“Well I love the idea of it being a public space that people can enjoy, especially as families…”
“I see the opportunity for this space to be one of the beacons of building back better post-pandemic, with a new focus on environment and recreation”
“The Great Highway has made it possible for Brooks to explore his passion for cycling while engaging with the community and enjoying the exciting beach environment”
“I think it’s really great for people in the neighborhood to relax when they’re here rather than a bunch of cars speeding up and down”
