Tell us about the club!
We’re the Great Highway Skate Crew. We meet at Irving & Great Highway. Sometimes at sunset, sometimes in the morning. You can find info at @MzRadha on instagram, and Nextdoor. This week was the second one… people showed and it’s good because I can meet people as we’re going, and I intend to grow this over time to have a big skate crew.
I just wanted to see who would show. And I know over time more people will because I see so many skaters. And half of it will be me just chatting with people on Great Highway who have skates on. There’s so many fun skate people out there…
I started skating again during the pandemic, I got skates for my daughter and I. I want to shout out Quad Republic, super helpful shop to get skates. I’ve got 4 sets of skates there already. She has all the padding… knee pads, elbow pads, wrist pads…
I’m an ocean open swimmer, that’s what I usually do. I’m a regular ocean swimmer at China Beach. China Beach Swim Pod. I usually swim every day, no wetsuit.
I’m a real estate agent, have been for over 20 years here in the city. I’m all over the bay, I’ll go wherever the water goes. Across the bay, Mill valley, Sausalito, Tiburon… I love the water, I’m a bit of a water creature.
Is that part of the reason you love The Great Highway so much?
Yes! It’s fabulous! Look at this! We should have a beautiful place to hang out. We have the park, but it’s not the ocean! The other side of the city has the promenade and the Embarcadero, and you can walk along the Bay…
How do you feel about keeping The Great Highway as a park? Have you heard about people opposing it?
I’ve lived here for eight years, I drive everywhere, all the time. I’m fine with not having the Great Highway (for driving) I used it, but I don’t feel the loss. This is so much better than having another road to drive on.
It has been the best thing for the neighborhood… everyone I know uses it. And i know a lot of people here. I love this community. Trouble is my coffee shop, I love having the bookstore, I get my tattoos with Jessie. Having The Great Highway is rad. It’s for everyone.
Do you know anyone around here who is against this being kept as a park?
No! Do you? You can just ask anyone! What do you think? Those people are at home hibernating (that’s what Nextdoor is for) And I’m talking to people all the time!
And sometimes it’s quiet out there, because it’s the Sunset, and it’s quiet sometimes. For the most part, though, theres’ a lot of people. It’s every day. I’m out there every day.
I think the two fixes (for traffic in the neighborhood) is putting speed bumps on the Lower Great Highway, and to fix the timing on Sunset Boulevard… It’s so bad right now. It could just be THE north- south thoroughfare.
